With so many of us in a rush in the mornings it is easy to skip breakfast or make a poor choice. However, breakfast they say is the most important meal of the day. Here’s why:
- Breakfast makes our minds more efficient. Research shows that a nutritious breakfast helps us to focus and concentrate on our work and in school
- Breakfast helps control our behaviors and moods. Controlling our behaviors and moods is hard to do for both children and adults when we are hungry. A healthy breakfast fills you up and controls blood sugars which steadies both behaviors and moods. Steady blood sugar also keeps us from having a boost of energy and then crashing or feeling fatigued.
- Breakfast helps maintain weight. Skipping breakfast is not a good idea for your waist line. People who skip breakfast or eat an unhealthy breakfast tend to eat more unhealthy food throughout the day.
A healthy breakfast includes fruits and vegetables with the right balance of complex carbohydrates and proteins. Here are some examples of a balanced breakfast.
- Scrambled eggs with diced up veggies and a side of fruit
- Greek yogurt with honey, berries and slivered almonds
- Almond butter on sliced apples with a glass of milk of choice
- Smoothies with fruit, veggies, protein powder or Greek yogurt
- Eggs with sweet potatoes, veggies and nitrate free sausage
- Whole wheat pancakes with maple syrup, Greek yogurt or almond butter and berries
